چکیده

This session examined how effects of GM plants can be distinguished from those of non-GM comparators, how these differences can be measured, and how effects on non-targets and on plant fitness can be assessed. This review focuses on issues concerning plant fitness and invasiveness, and explores how the consequences of changes can be evaluated in terms of their environmental impact for risk assessments. All three authors discussed the first task, which is to determine which life cycle parameters and characteristics of a plant (e.g. fecundity, establishment, seedling survival, etc.) are most associated with fitness and therefore likely to increase fitness if they are modified. The second task is to try to determine whether increased fitness will lead to enhanced invasiveness. The authors used background knowledge of the behavior and life cycle of conventional plants to determine the factors affecting their behavior and fitness. They conducted tests to determine the significance of life cycle parameters, and then used these parameters as primary inputs into models to estimate changes in fitness in recipient plants. They discussed the development of plant (generic) and ecosystem models (e.g. matrix models), in order to predict changes in fitness and environmental conse-

9th International Symposium on the Biosafety of Genetically Modified Organisms. Session VI: Estimating likelihood and exposure, Part II.

Exposure or likelihood of occurrence of an identified hazard is a key factor used by regulators in determining the magnitude of risk. One example of exposure is the amount of gene flow between transgenic crops and their non-transgenic counterparts or their compatible wild relatives. Gene flow itself is not a hazard, but instead represents the exposure of the environment to transgenes and the po...

Modern biotechnology can help global coalition against hunger and malnutrition. Global area under the production of transgenic plants has reached 134 million hectares at the end of the year 2009 and is expected to reach nearly 150 million hectares by the year 2010. In spite of the benefits that modern biotechnology offers, concerns have been raised in the proper and environmentally sound and sa...

The organization for economic cooperation and development: challenges for risk assessment.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's (OECD) Working Group for the Harmonization of Regulatory Oversight (Working Group) has taken the opportunity over the last several years to identify the challenges to environmental risk assessment of transgenic organisms, particularly plants. These initiatives have included most importantly, a report to the G8, the Rapporteur's Report ...
